About The Deep Dive

The Deep Dive is a community service project as a part of the Lazarus Leadership Fellows Program, dedicated to encouraging STEM education inside and outside the classroom. First, the site provides a list of extracurricular activities accessible to students in the DMV area, offering basic information about each program, along with contact points and links to connect visitors to each program's site. Through subsections in each program’s dedicated section, the page provides a “deeper dive” into each program, allowing students to find which type of programs will fit them. The Listen In section allows students to get insight into the path to success in various STEM fields through the experiences of current STEM professionals. The Tips & Tricks section is meant to guide high schoolers through what is often a difficult 4 years with an expansive list of resources to help along the way.

I would also like to acknowledge the Lazarus Institution, the interviewed professionals, program alumni, and program directors who made this website possible.

About Me

My name is Nathaniel, and I'm currently a senior at B-CC High School in Bethesda, Maryland. STEM has been like a second home for me for as long as I can remember.  I joined my first STEM extracurricular activity in elementary school, a Scratch club, and participated in an after-school math club in middle school. I'm currently a vice president of the Engineering Club at B-CC, and I've taken various STEM classes in high school. My main interests are math and engineering, but I've also enjoyed learning about history, economics, and computer science. Outside of school, I've played baseball, run cross country, and love watching football on Sundays.

Why The Deep Dive

When I joined the Lazarus Fellowship and was assigned the task of creating a community service project, I knew I had to connect with my love for STEM. It began when I realized I often found it challenging to find the right STEM programs for my abilities and future goals. Often, I would find an interesting program but get thrown off by the price tag or find limited information on what the program would look like on a day-to-day basis. I became hesitant about joining these programs, worried I was throwing money away or jumping into something I would be uninterested in. It pushed me to create The Deep Dive, and while it was originally intended to be an extracurricular activity search, I turned it into a high school help page for STEM students. Through my own experiences, I understood that learning from STEM professionals and mentors directly would be one of the best ways for high schoolers to set their pathway to success, leading to the creation of the Listen In page. Lastly, I knew my experiences with high school would be different from those of others. As a result, I created the Tips & Tricks page to give my advice on various high school topics, as well as the advice of professionals.
